General information & background

We have received more inquiries about Hope than any other gown in our shop, and it's not difficult to see why! This vintage Christian Dior wedding dress is unlike anything else in our collection.

The design of Hope was clearly influenced by the fashions of the 1930s and 1940s. The neckline recalls Dior's famous Quiproquo dress from 1951 (pictured in the final image, and held in the collection of the Met Museum), as well as some of the creations of couturier Charles James. And while we are used to seeing the drop waist used with the big ball gown skirts of the '80s and '90s, here it reflects the styles of the 1940s with its more streamlined skirt.

While there is plenty of fabric in the skirt (as you can see by the long, dramatic train), the weight and amount of drape of the fabric means that it hangs and pools rather than billows out.

Christian Dior Hope is finished with a statement bow at the side waist, which anchors it more firmly in the era of its creation: the late 1980s / early 1990s. The bow can be removed, of course, but it provides a nice focal point for the gown.

Hope is the perfect statement dress for someone who wants to make a dramatic entrance without wearing a big skirt.
