General information & background

Cushla Kelly was a couture bridal designer based in New Zealand whose wedding dresses were distributed by Harrod's in London in the 1990s. This dress came to us from the UK.

The Leila gown was constructed from ivory silk dupion, a staple fabric of high-end British bridal attire in the '90s. The bodice has a soft sweetheart neckline and long, off-shoulder sleeves. The sleeves are finished with pointed cuffs and a row of covered buttons. Leila has a soft A-line silhouette. Fabric panels, not gathering, were used to create the volume in the skirt, which gives the silhouette a clean and elegant shape.

The standout feature of this gown is the pearl embellishment.  Thousands of pearls adorn the bodice. These were placed and sewn by hand, one by one, in a process that would have taken dozens and dozens of hours to carry out. A wide band of the same hand-sewn pearls trims the cuffs of the sleeves.

This dress was made to the highest standards, including enough internal structure to support the weight of the bodice and sleeves. It cost nearly $10,000 in today's dollars, which is largely a reflection of the amount of handwork that went into constructing and embellishing it. Leila showcases the best of what '90s British bridal has to offer.
