It does not get more classic than this vintage Ralph Lauren gown from the Autumn/Winter 2003 collection.
The A/W 2003 collection, presented in a Chelsea art gallery against a backdrop of exposed brick, was characterized by “elegantly tailored pieces that underscored [Lauren's] ability to transpose menswear into a feminine key.” Writing for Vogue, Janet Ozzard noted that this particular gown “[demands] a night…on the red carpet.” (Runway image is shown on the last slide.) Of course, it’s perfect for a wedding too.
Look 36 is crafted from drapey, buttery bias-cut silk charmeuse that skims the body, showcasing the many benefits of the bias-cut technique for creating a gown that is as luxe as it is easy to wear. (The bias cut was popularized by our namesake, Madeleine Vionnet, in the 1920s.) Look 36 features Lauren’s signature halter neckline and a daring low back. The long silk ties at the neckline can be worn in a few ways, as shown.
Sizing
It is tagged a size 6. Because it is bias cut, there is significant stretch. In order to ensure a comfortable fit, we recommend measurements no larger than 35-29-38. Of course, it can be tailored smaller.
Condition notes
Amazingly, our dress is new with its original Ralph Lauren hang tag. It is in very good vintage condition. It has some small snags on the front, which is to be expected for a gown that has been stored for almost 25 years; these do not detract from its overall beauty. There is also a very light mark on the inside of the chest area (on the lining - not visible on the exterior).
