General background & information

Edwina is a vintage Vera Wang wedding dress from the Spring 1999 collection (see runway images in the last two slides). Edwina is constructed from soft duchess silk satin. The fabric is lighter-bodied than Vera's other duchess silk satin gowns from that period, and it has a more muted, almost velvety texture.

Edwina has an empire waist, but can be fitted to the natural waist. The bodice has a wide scoop neckline with medium-width straps. The skirt has a soft A-line silhouette. Most of the volume of the skirt comes from the natural structure of the fabric, not crinoline. This gives it a slightly more relaxed feel than other vintage Vera ball gowns from that year.

Edwina is embellished with tambour embroidery along the bust, straps, and train. Tambour was an unusual technique to use on a wedding dress at the time (see another example of tambour work on the Vera Wang Marigold gown here), and is unheard-of today. It must be carried out by hand. Today, tambour is used almost exclusively to embellish garments for haute couture runway shows.
