General information & background

Marigold is a semi-structured (or soft A-line) Y2K Vera Wang wedding dress that is constructed from soft, delicate English net. The English net is ruched and draped over the bodice, and it extends into long ribbons in the back that can be tied in a loose, drapey bow or wrapped around the shoulders. Marigold can be worn as an empire-waist dress that flares out below the bust with little waist shaping, or it can be fitted to the natural waist during alterations.

What makes Marigold so special and remarkable is the couture embroidery along the base of the skirt. This embellishment was carried out using a technique called tambour. Because this style of embroidery involves a high degree of skill, it was very unusual to see it used in a wedding dress at the time - and today it is completely unheard-of. Tambour embellishments are used almost exclusively in haute couture runway shows.

The embellishment on Marigold is unlike anything else you will find in bridal attire, whether vintage or contemporary. The late 1990s and early 2000s were the last time when it was possible to find wedding dresses embellished using historic embroidery techniques like this. Marigold is a very special heirloom-quality gown. It is a great choice for someone who has an appreciation for fine textiles and handwork.

Size & measurements

Measurements must be used to assess whether a gown will fit you or can be altered to fit you. The flat measurements of this vintage Vera Wang are as follows:

Bust - 35"

Waist - 31"

Hip - 38"

Marigold is approximately a modern-day size 6.

Condition notes

Marigold is in excellent vintage condition with few flaws to note. It is possible that there are missing embellishments, but it would be difficult or impossible to tell because of the density and abstract nature of the motifs. Given the lack of any discoloration on the interior of the bodice, we believe this gown was probably never worn.
